The Los Angeles Chargers dominated the Las Vegas Raiders 31-14 to position themselves closer to a playoff spot. However, it may have come at great cost. After the game, coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed that quarterback Justin Herbert had broken a bone in his left hand. He will undergo surgery on Monday, and it is unknown if he will need to miss the game against the Philadelphia Eagles on December 8.He also revealed that the injury forced the team to execute offensive plays solely from shotgun, rather than a mix of it and play-action/run-pass option:"There's some things that -- getting under center -- I thought that would be difficult."Nevertheless, Harbaugh had praise for Herbert:"I know that he's as tough as they come. Taped it up, glove, and played a great game."Against the Raiders, Herbert completed 15 of 20 attempts for 151 for two touchdowns - one each to Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston - against an interception by Kyu Blu Kelly.Kimani Vidal dominated on the ground, covering 126 yards and scoring a touchdown on 25 carries. Jaret Patterson added 11 rushes for 54 yards and a score.Meanwhile, Geno Smith completed 18 of 23 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns - both to Brock Bowers - against an interception to Tony Jefferson. Ashton Jeanty was limited to just 31 yards on 15 carries.Justin Herbert still aiming to lead Chargers in MNF game against Eagles despite broken handThis wass not the first time the Chargers saw Justin Herbert play through injury. Last season, also against the Raiders, he played through a fractured finger, even managing to finish the game. And despite his newest injury, he is optimistic that he will be on the field come Dec. 8. During his press conference, he said:“I’m treating it as if I’m playing Monday. … It’s one of those things where you just stabilize it. … I’m not the doctor, but, yeah, they were hopeful. So, I think that’s a good thing.”Herbert also praised Kimani Vidal and Jaret Patterson for helping him offensively by dominating in the ground game:"They're really fun to play with. Those two guys have done such a great job this year. … I'm really happy for both those guys because they work really hard week in and week out, and to see them go have success like that today, it's really well-earned."With the win, the Chargers stand at 8-4, good enough for the best wild-card spot if the playoffs were to start today.
