When Ward attended Columbia High School, he participated in basketball and football. In his junior season, he completed 72 of 124 passes for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns for the Columbia Football League. Because he played in Columbia's Wing T offense, Ward only averaged 12 pass attempts per game as a senior. He only passed for 948 yards and eight touchdowns in his senior year in high school.
