NHRA legend John Force is retiring from formal racing. The 16-time Funny Car champion hasn’t raced since suffering a career-threatening brain injury during the NHRA Virginia Nationals in June 2024.

Force is still recovering from the harrowing aftermath of the crash. Earlier this month, he was admitted to the Barrow Neurological Institute, a neurological rehabilitation center in Phoenix, to treat cognitive and behavioral symptoms from the injury.

A whole month later, Force got discharged. He will now undergo extensive outpatient speech and OTPT (Occupational and Physical Therapy) to fix lingering issues, including short-term memory loss.

The news was shared through John Force Racing's official X handle. In the video, Force addressed the topic of his retirement and said,

“It’s been over a year but I’ve been under doctors’ care and I still am so if I say anything wrong, please excuse me,” John Force said on X. “But it’s time for me to retire. It all made sense to me even though I knew I had medical stuff that I had to address, that, 'do I want to get back in the car and get hit in the head?' And I don’t.”

Force’s three daughters have all competed in the NHRA, with Brittany being in her final year of Top Fuel competition. Brittany’s sisters, Ashley Force Hood and Courtney Force, retired back in 2010 and 2018, respectively.

“It was time for me with Brittany stepping out of the seat and I don’t want to get hurt,” Force continued. “I’ve said it many times, I’m going to stay in the car until my race car gets me and I always meant that.”

Throughout his long and illustrious career, John Force has amassed a total of 157 NHRA victories. After winning his first championship in 1990, Force captured 14 titles between 1991 and 2010. His last one came in 2013, although that year, he finished second in points standings.

John Force’s daughter drops an important update on the legendary driver’s health

John Force is currently on his way to recovery, thanks to the doctors who treated him at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. After spending 30 days at the facility, Force is finally ready to sleep in his own bed, and that too, without any assistance.

However, Force hasn’t recovered completely. The 76-year-old will now go through outpatient speech and OTPT (Occupational and Physical Therapy) to deal with his cognitive issues and memory loss.

Brittany, Force’s daughter, shared an update on the same through X and wrote (via John Force Racing),

“After 30 days my dad is finally heading home where we will continue outpatient therapy. These next steps to recovery will definitely be a family effort! Here's some pics from our time in Phoenix."

Force is now able to walk with assistance. However, he still struggles with cognitive function and memory.
