Former NASCAR Cup Series driver Mark Martin has reacted to the 2025 charter agreement on X. The details were made public after Judge Kenneth D. Bell's ruling, and stock car analyst Bob Pockrass shared the details on social media.

The 2025 charter agreement covers all 36 chartered cars across 13 racing teams. It guarantees a team entry to all Cup Series racing events, and the prize distribution format has also been updated. The prize pool distribution depends on how well the teams perform over the last two seasons.

Previously, NASCAR followed a three-year rolling average of championship finishes from 2016 to 2024. However, this year the rule changed to a two-year rolling average, and the team's most recent results affect their payments compared to the previous agreement. In light of this change, Mark Martin wrote:

"I’m sure glad I raced when I did. What an era it was."

Following the new charter agreement, the sanctioning body will share the teams' prize pool for the next year within 30 days after the season ends.

The situation rose when 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports refused to sign the charter agreement last October. They filed a lawsuit against the governing body and NASCAR's CEO, Jim France, for creating a monopoly in the sport. After a series of hearings, the lawsuit is set to go on trial on December 1, 2025.

"The King knows": Mark Martin opened up about Richard Petty's take on the current playoff format

In September 2025, seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Richard Petty appeared on Jeff Gluck's 12-question interview. During the interaction, Petty was asked if he believed in Mark Martin's idea of reviving the old-school playoff format in the NextGen era.

The current format features an elimination-style approach, eliminating the four low-scoring drivers in each round. Mark Martin has spent over three decades on the track and witnessed the sport's evolution closely. However, he still thought that the modern era format lacks in a few aspects compared to the old-school format.

Richard Petty, the NASCAR champion, also shares Mark Martin's idea and stated:

"When they give points for leading different (stages) in the race and they give points for all this other stuff, that’s a bunch of crap, OK? If you’re sitting there and watching a football game and the team has been behind the whole game and they kick a field goal and they win the game, the guys who lost got a zero. That should be the same way in NASCAR racing. I don’t care if you lead 499 laps of a 500-lap race — if you get beat, then you’re not the winner, and you shouldn’t have any (extra) points."

Martin praised 'The King' for his support and stated:

"The King knows."

Mark Martin logged 40 wins, 271 top fives, 453 top tens, and 56 poles in 882 starts in his Cup Series career. Additionally, he had an average start of 12.1 and led 12,877 laps in the series.
