Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) has confirmed that Brent Crews underwent a planned shoulder operation this week. The team said that the procedure was timed for the off-season to let Crews heal without missing races, and surgery was meant to address nagging issues Crews felt during the season.

The 17-year-old Toyota Racing Development's TD2 driver shared a video of himself lying in a hospital bed earlier this week. His post went viral on social media, with fans questioning and speculating that it followed off-track accidents.

Crews' friend and 2025 Xfinity Series champion Jesse Love also reacted to his post. However, JGR cleared the air and said that Crews had no urgent injury.

"There was no urgency or specific injury that caused the need, and the decision to undergo surgery was based on recovery time availability, rather than any type of medical urgency," Joe Gibbs Racing told TobyChristie.com.

The team said recovery time was the main factor and that Crews should be healed and finish his rehab before the 2026 season.

Meanwhile, Crews piled up wins competing part-time in the ARCA Series this year. He swept the two Phoenix races and scored four other victories at Rockingham, IRP, Springfield, and Bristol. Those results helped mark him as a top prospect in the Toyota Driver Development Program.

Mid-season, Crews also announced Brent Crews Motorsports. He bought a truck and raised funds, with backing from Pristine Auction, to run select events. The team debuted at Watkins Glen on August 8 and said that the move came from childhood curiosity about building race cars, as he wanted to race on road courses.

JGR has not yet announced Crews' 2026 season plans. However, the North Carolina native has been rumored to move up to a full-time schedule.

Brent Crews' 2026 schedule with Joe Gibbs Racing still unclear

Brent Crews, who made 10 starts in the NASCAR Truck Series this season, pushed for his first series win twice with Tricon Garage. He ran near the front at the Charlotte ROVAL and at Martinsville and lost those close battles to TRICON teammate Corey Heim. At the Craftsman Truck Series championship race, a mechanical failure cut a promising run short and left Crews 28th. He called the season a learning year and said truck laps made him better in ARCA cars.

Crews is expected to move into a full-time NASCAR O'Reilly (Xfinity) Series ride with Joe Gibbs Racing once he turns 18 in March. Fox Sports' Bob Pockrass speculated in August that Crews might race full-time in O'Reilly next season at Joe Gibbs Racing after he turns 18 in March.

Brent Crews might also return part-time in his self-owned No. 70 Toyota Tundra truck.
