On Samantha Busch’s “Certified Oversharer” podcast, Kim Burton expressed her feelings about the horrors of being a NASCAR driver's mom. She recalled the fear she felt when her son, Harrison Burton, flipped in the Daytona 500 during his rookie season.

The incident dates back to 2022, when Harrison was leading an outside lane at Daytona and got turned after a push went wrong. Recalling the day, Kim said:

“So, Harrison’s first Daytona 500, right? Keselowski hit…those cars they were weird right and they hadn’t raced them yet, and he hits him in the wrong way and he flips down the back straightaway. I don’t even remember, but I know I screamed so loud it wasn’t even funny. Like I just lost it.

"Cause I don’t know, I just… Jeff had never flipped… and you don’t hear them, the microphones go out, and you don’’t know if they’re okay, and we didn’t know this car right… we didn’t know what was gonna happen in it.”

In that race, fewer than five laps remained in Stage 1 when an eight-car crash started at the front of the pack. Harrison was being pushed by Brad Keselowski, who was trying to gain ground on Martin Truex Jr. The push hit at the wrong angle, which sent Harrison into William Byron. More cars piled in. Harrison’s Ford flipped, rolled, and came to rest in the middle of the field.

NASCAR later reported that Harrison did not feel a hard hit but did find himself upside down mid-crash. Four drivers, including Harrison, Byron, Denny Hamlin, and Ross Chastain, were out of the race. All walked away after being checked in the infield care center.

Drivers had mixed reactions afterward. Hamlin said that the push was too aggressive. Byron said that his own car took the hit well, but the crash ruined his day. Keselowski continued and finished the stage in second. Harrison ended the day in 40th place. He had led three laps before the crash and said he had only been trying to hold his line.

Kim Burton’s relief two years after the crash as Harrison earned a Daytona win

Two years after the 2022 flip, Kim Burton experienced an opposite emotion. In 2024, Harrison went from last in the standings to winning at Daytona and securing a spot in the playoffs.

On August 25, Harrison won the Coke Zero Sugar 400 after taking the lead on the final lap. He started from 34th and moved to the front. His future remained uncertain because Wood Brothers Racing planned to part ways with him after the season, but the win gave him a major career boost.

The moment was special for Kim Burton, who celebrated with him on Victory Lane. She said:

“I don't think it's really sunk in yet. Um, amazing. I knew he could do it. I believe in him since he was four years old. I watched him do, you know, up through the light, up through his age, going up through his ages. And I'm so, I'm so excited. I can't even talk right now.”

Kim Burton said that she had been nervous during the race because the memory of his flip never fully left her. She kept listening to spotter Jason guide him through the blocks on the high and low lines. She was worried that he might get turned again in the closing laps. Kim added:

“I can't believe it but I can. I believe in him. He deserves this just as much as anybody else...I kept listening to Jason telling him blocking low blocking high and I just figured that he was going to get turned around and be in the air and I didn't want to see that. I opened my eyes just as they were going across to start finish and I saw he was in the lead.”

For Kim Burton, the win at the same track where she once watched her son flip felt like a full turnaround. It was a moment of relief and pride after two years of the horrible incident.
