Mark Martin was furious when he learned of NASCAR commissioner Steve Phelps’ alleged “stupid redneck” comments on team owner Richard Childress. Martin, now 66, is a former NASCAR driver known for driving the iconic No. 6 Ford for Roush Racing (now known as RFK Racing) for most of his career.

As per Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic, Childress had said something critical about the cost of NextGen cars and NASCAR’s new media deal during a radio appearance back in 2023. And as a result, Phelps, the then-NASCAR president, called Childress a “stupid redneck who owes his entire fortune to NASCAR” while texting Brian Herbst, NASCAR chief media and revenue officer.

Mark Martin made a disapproving stance regarding the Phelps comments and said,

“To be real honest with you, I did become totally furious with the a** clown, you know, with him (Phelps) calling him (Childress) that is totally a bridge too far,” Martin said on X. “I’m gonna stick here and defend Richard Childress because I have respect for everything he’s done in his career.”

Richard Childress Racing is one of the winningest race teams in NASCAR. As of today, the organization owns 118 total Cup Series victories, including three Brickyard 400s and three Daytona 500s. Through the years, RCR has housed exceptional NASCAR drivers like Dale Earnhardt and Kevin Harvick.

Until 1995, back when NASCAR introduced the Craftsman Truck Series, Richard Childress Racing competed with just one car. Today, RCR fields two full-time entries in the NASCAR Cup Series, driven by Austin Dillon and two-time series champion Kyle Busch.

Richard Childress contemplating legal action against NASCAR executive

Following the latest text controversy between NASCAR commissioner Steve Phelps and Richard Childress, the 80-year-old automotive tycoon is considering legal action against NASCAR.

On that note, Richard Childress Racing issued an official statement on X, formerly known as Twitter. The same was reported by Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports. The statement read:

“RCR and Richard Childress are deeply disappointed by the insensitive and defamatory statements made about Mr. Childress in recently surfaced text messages between NASCAR executives Steve Phelps and Brian Herbst.”

“These comments reflect the way certain NASCAR executives have historically viewed and treated many team owners like Mr. Childress, who have devoted their lives to strengthening the sport for its fans, its sponsors, and all who compete in it."

For now, all eyes are on the final trial between NASCAR, 23XI Racing, and Front Row Motorsports, which will be held starting on December 1.
