NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart has lauded Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson’s versatility behind the wheel of various race cars. Be it Late Models or Winged Sprint Cars, Larson’s racing prowess brings the best out of every single vehicle that he drives.

It all happened on the latest episode of the "Dale Jr. Download" podcast. As the guest of the week, Stewart joined hosts Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mike Davis, President and Executive Producer of Dirty Mo Media, an original content company created by Dale Jr. himself.

Stewart opined that NASCAR lacks drivers like Larson, who can win in any car they are put inside. Another such driver was the legendary Mario Andretti, who has won races in Formula One, IndyCar, the World Sportscar Championship, and last but not least, NASCAR.

“The funny thing about that kid is that you just pick him up, you put him in a car, 'Go play nice with the other kids.' Just send him off; you don't have to tell him anything,” Tony Stewart said of Larson. “You just send him off and let him drive. And he figures it out.”

“What he does, going from Late Models to Sprint Cars and then getting in the Cup car, and how good he is at all of them... you don't find guys like that anymore. He is the diamond in the rough for sure,” Stewart added.

Tony Stewart is fresh off his 2025 NHRA campaign, which ended with the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals at the iconic Pomona drag strip in California. Driving his wife Leah Pruett’s TSR Dodge//SRT Direct Connection Top Fuel Dragster, Stewart finished the season fifth in points.

“I was just keeping Leah’s seat warm” - Tony Stewart explains why TSR cannot add a second Top Fuel entry

When Leah Pruett went on a temporary hiatus from her NHRA career, her husband and racing legend Tony Stewart volunteered to substitute. Notably, the former NASCAR driver picked up his maiden career NHRA Top Fuel victory at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in April 2025.

The following month, Stewart bagged his second career win at the Route 66 Nationals in Chicago. However, Stewart knew he would have to vacate his wife’s Top Fuel dragster whenever she wanted to return.

And that’s exactly what he did. Pruett, who took a break from formal NHRA racing to have a child with her husband, will return to her usual Top Fuel Dragster for the 2026 season.

Meanwhile, Stewart, who is currently in his off-season, will move to Elite Motorsports next year. On that note, the motorsports icon said:

“I said from the very beginning that I was just keeping Leah's seat warm and that it was hers as soon as she was ready to come back. And as much as I wanted to continue driving, TSR is not in a position to add a second Top Fuel car.”

Tony Stewart won the NHRA Rookie of the Year honors back in 2024. 2026 will mark his third straight season competing in NHRA.
