Matt Hagan competed against Austin Prock in the final championship title battle on Sunday. During the final race, Prock clinched his second consecutive title after the In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip was cancled due to weather and unsafe track conditions.

However, the former stock car racing team owner was not disappointed in Hagan’s performance. He highlighted that his team, Tony Stewart Nitro, was not in a good place at mid-season anyway. Stewart claimed it was hard to express disappointment in his team, as it had showcased improvement, which was their primary goal for the season.

The former Cup Series champion further explained:

“I think, you know, midway through the season we weren't really in position anyway. So, I mean, I think they're happy with where they ended up. Uh... For us, all I wanted at the beginning—the goal is just to see the needle move in the right direction."
"So with two wins and the regular season championship, we definitely saw the needle move the right way. Hard to be disappointed with that. Obviously, we'd like to perform better in the countdown. Like I said, I just keep referring back to, you know, we just wanted to see improvement with the team, and we definitely did that for sure,” he concluded.

Tony Stewart formed TSR back in 2021 and debuted in the NHRA Series in 2022. The team fields two entries in the NHRA Drag Racing series, with one in the Top Fuel category and one in the Funny Car series. Matt Hagan pilots the Funny Car entry for the team, and Stewart replaced his wife, Leah Pruett, in the Top Fuel ride.

When Tony Stewart elucidated the key difference between NASCAR and drag racing in the NHRA Series

In the 2024 season, Tony Stewart was featured in an interview with his former team driver, Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour podcast. During the episode, Stewart explained the key differences between stock car racing and drag racing.

Stewart ranks among the few drivers with extensive experience in racing. Reflecting on that, Stewart pointed out that NHRA drag races generally last around three to four seconds. Meanwhile, NASCAR races wrap up in three to four hours, depending on the tracks.

Following that, Tony Stewart told Harvick:

“It’s not like what you and I were used to, where we’ve got a three-and-a-half-hour race. We’ve got six or eight pit stops during the day, and we have three, four, or five hundred laps to get the job done. If we make a mistake, we're going to fix it."

Tony Stewart emphasized that 70% of the performance depends on the car, and 30% is the crew. However, in the NHRA drag racing series, it all depends on the car’s tuning and setup. Additionally, stock car racing jerseys are ten pounds lighter than those in drag racing.
