Former NASCAR Cup Series champion Tony Stewart sat down with stock car racing veteran Kyle Petty back in 2018. During the interaction, Stewart spoke about a meeting where 20 grid drivers suggested ideas to improve the sport with the governing body chief.

However, he claimed that things headed in a different direction than the former Cup Series team owner expected. During the meeting, the stock car racing chief allegedly shut down the ideas, saying they were the opposite of what he had in mind.

Tony Stewart was furious over the NASCAR personnel's comments on the situation. He claimed that the stock car racing chief had no prior experience in racing and that he came from an auto manufacturer background.

The current NHRA Series driver stated [00:10 onward]:

"I remember 20 of us drivers went about five years ago, maybe six years ago, and sat with NASCAR and said, These are the things that we think will help make the sport better. And a person in NASCAR that I won't name sat there and looked me square in the eye and said that everything that we were talking about and what I was saying was 180 degrees backwards from what they thought was going to fix it."

"And that's kind of when I was like, we're in bad shape; we're in trouble. Having somebody like this guy that's changing the direction of what's going to happen," he added.

Tony Stewart retired from his 18-year career in stock car racing in 2016. He clinched 49 victories, 187 top fives, 308 top tens, and 15 pole positions in 618 starts. Additionally, he led 12,818 laps, maintaining an average finish of 14.12.

The comments, which can be seen in the resurfaced 2018 Tony Stewart interview clip, have become a major talking point in the NASCAR community as the antitrust lawsuit by 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports progresses.

"It’s not like what you and I were used to": When Tony Stewart elucidated the difference between NASCAR and NHRA drag racing

Last year, Stewart appeared on Kevin Harvick's Happy Hour podcast. During the episode, he opened up about the key difference between drag racing in the NHRA Series and stock car racing.

Stewart began by comparing the race duration of both series. He highlighted that NASCAR races generally consist of several laps and last around three to four hours. Meanwhile, the NHRA Series lasts around three to four seconds. Following that, he explained:

“It’s not like what you and I were used to, where we’ve got a three-and-a-half-hour race. We’ve got six or eight pit stops during the day, and we have three, four, or five hundred laps to get the job done. If we make a mistake, we're going to fix it."

Tony Stewart concluded that stock car racing results depend 70% on the driver's skill set, and the remaining 30% is up to the crew. On the other hand, he claimed that in the NHRA Series, it all depends on the engine tuning and setup.

Additionally, the drag racing suits are ten pounds heavier compared to the stock car racing jerseys.
