Meanwhile, Dale Jr. did not race in any of the top-three NASCAR national series this season for the first time since 1995. The 51-year-old had raced at least once every year after retiring from full-time racing in 2017. Last season, he competed in the Xfinity Series at Bristol but confirmed that he had no plans to race in 2025.

Dale Jr., who signed a new multi-year contract with Amazon and TNT for the NASCAR Cup Series broadcast booth, said that there was no sponsor requirement, and he wanted to focus on his work in broadcasting. However, he did make his crew chief debut this season.

"Slowly turning that faucet off" - Dale Earnhardt Jr. on planning racing future 'year-to-year' and 'slowly turning' it off

Dale Earnhardt Jr. made his surprising crew chief debut for the No. 88 JR Motorsports team in the Xfinity Series this July. He stepped into the role for one race at Pocono Raceway after crew chief Mardy Lindley was suspended for a week.

18-year-old Connor Zilisch won and gave Dale Jr. his first win as crew chief. As for racing, he plans to return next season, but his long-term racing future is still up in the air.

"I'm definitely going to run next year, and it's really a year-to-year kind of thing," Dale Earnhardt Jr. told The Athletic.

Dale Jr. compared his decision to give up racing to when he sold a helicopter he bought from Tony Stewart until he felt ready to stop completely.

"I think one day I'll just wake up and go, 'You know what? I think that was it. I think that was the last one.' I really feel it'll be that way. It's been like a faucet I've been slowly turning off as I went and ran those Xfinity Series races once a year, and now the Late Model races. I'm just kind of slowly turning that faucet off until I feel like I'm ready to shut it off entirely," he added.

Dale Jr. will return to his commentator role in the NASCAR Cup Series booth in 2026.
