Aljamain Sterling recently opened up about Umar Nurmagomedov’s impressive performance inside the octagon on Saturday, praising him for his self-awareness.

For context, many people considered Umar to be as dominant as his cousin Khabib Nurmagomedov, who retired from the sport undefeated. However, the 29-year-old was unable to dethrone reigning bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 311 earlier this year, losing his unbeaten MMA record.

Umar eventually bounced back and defeated Mario Bautista with a solid performance at UFC 321. In his post-fight interview, he said that he cannot be like Khabib, which piqued the interest of Sterling. In a recent YouTube video, the former 135-pound champion praised Umar and said that the Dagestani will write his own story, calling him a future UFC champion:

''Congrats to Umar...I really enjoyed what Umar said in the post-fight interview. He brought up Khabib, like how Khabib would come home late at night and then go train and he said, ‘We’re not that dedicated.’ I’m like, thank you, because you’re now acknowledging that you’re not Khabib, you’d like to be like Khabib...And from my perspective where I get to see the guy and how he trains and the work that he puts in and I can compare that to the work that I see other guys put in, compare that to the work that I see myself putting in.''

He added:

''It’s nice to see the humbleness. I do think Umar is eventually going to become a champion at some point in his career. I still think he should fight one more; it would do him a favor to have one more fight before jumping into a title shot situation again."

Aljamain Sterling clarifies his statement regarding UFC 321's main event

UFC 321's headliner featured a heavyweight title fight between reigning champion Tom Aspinall and Ciryl Gane. Their matchup was declared a no contest after Gane landed an accidental eye poke, prompting reactions from many in the MMA community, including Aljamain Sterling, who questioned the Brit's behavior. As a result, 'Funk Master' faced a lot of criticism.

In a recent YouTube video, Sterling explained his comments:

''I made some comments on the Aspinall fight and how he handled the situation of the foul, and I think my opinion still stands...When Tommy got poked in the eye, the first thing he said is, 'I cannot see.' We all know when you are fouled, you cannot say those words otherwise the referee is inclined to stop the fight. That's just the way the rules are made. Don't be mad at me.'' [0:17 of the video]
