Australian BJJ wizard Lachlan Giles just finished arguably the greatest submission grappler of all time. Despite announcing his retirement shortly after, it appears he's leaving the door slightly open for a potential return.
The 39-year-old Australian legend called it a day following his kneebar submission of Marcelo Garcia at ONE Fight Night 38 on Friday, Dec. 5, inside Bangkok's Lumpinee Stadium.
During his post-fight interview with Nick Atkin, the Melbourne native, however, suggested his retirement might not be as permanent as it seems:
"Yeah, that's the—at least, I mean who knows in the future—but that's my mindset right now. I'm retired. How can you get a better match than against the best in the world?"

That hesitation reveals the challenge of truly walking away from competition. Giles finished his career with the most significant victory possible—submitting the multi-time BJJ world champion in just slightly over seven minutes.
Countless fighters have announced retirements only to return when the right opponent or opportunity emerges. Do you think Giles will pull a U-turn and return to action on the global stage of ONE Championship?

That sentiment did not change at all even after he acquired a fine finish over the Brazilian ground game specialist inside the Mecca of Muay Thai.
"He's the best. To me, Marcelo is the best ever. I still think he's the best ever. He's incredible, so I feel like I got lucky. But hey, I got it. So, yeah," the 39-year-old offered.
