Craig Jones didn’t let Islam Makhachev’s jab slide and fired back with the kind of dry humor that’s become his trademark. Makhachev recently brushed off Jones’ influence on his opponent, Jack Della Maddalena’s UFC 322 camp.In an interview with Daniel Cormier, Makhachev said:"Let's make this Craig one fight. MMA fight. Everybody asked me, like he helped him to improve something. It's not working like this. When you bring someone for one camp or for two camps... It's not working like this. I give you a good example. What about Khamzat [Chimaev] fighting with Dricus [du Plessis]? He brought many coaches, many partners, but it didn't help. It's not working like this."The Australian grappling ace hit back online, joking that the Dagestani fighter should spend a few years training in Australia. He shared a moment of Makhachev reacting awkwardly to his mention and captioned the Instagram post:"Send him 2-3 years Australia and forget... That look, I’ve only seen in the exes that really loved me."Check out the Instagram post below: View this post on Instagram Instagram PostJones has become a familiar figure in high-level MMA corners, especially for fighters facing elite wrestlers. His blueprint was clear during Alexander Volkanovski’s first fight with Makhachev, where the featherweight champion’s defensive grappling held up far better than expected. That experience carried over to his ongoing work with Della Maddalena, who previously used Jones’ training to neutralize Belal Muhammad’s takedown-heavy approach at UFC 315.When Din Thomas backed Craig Jones as key to Jack Della Maddalena’s training against Islam MakhachevUFC analyst Din Thomas claimed in the past that he believes Craig Jones holds the blueprint for Jack Della Maddalena to overcome Islam Makhachev at UFC 322. Della Maddalena will defend his welterweight title against the Dagestani fighter on Nov. 15 at Madison Square Garden.Jones’ expertise in adapting jiu-jitsu to MMA was evident when he helped Alexander Volkanovski push Makhachev to the limit at UFC 284. The same approach worked for Della Maddalena’s win over Belal Muhammad at UFC 315. Thomas predicts that with more time under Jones, Della Maddalena will defend takedowns better and force Makhachev into late errors. In an episode of The Bohnfire podcast, Thomas said:"I think the answer lies within Craig Jones' approach of blending in a jiu-jitsu style that these guys aren't familiar with. We've seen it when Alexander Volkanovski fought Islam, and we've seen it when Jack fought Belal. And now he's got more time to work with Jack. Just on the little nuances and just different approaches, different grips, different angles, different positions. I think Jack's going to be very difficult to take down and hold down."
