Makhachev achieved double UFC division glory at UFC 322 with a dominant win over Jack Della Maddalena. St-Pierre is considered by many as one of the greatest in the history of MMA.

‘Rush’ is also a former two-division champion, and Whittaker was asked for his take on a fantasy fight between a prime St-Pierre and Makhachev.

Whittaker was speaking on the MMA Arcade podcast and claimed that the fight was tricky to call since ‘Rush’ had a good game against Makhachev.

However, Whittaker believed Makhachev could beat GSP thanks to his wrestling:

“I think Islam would get it done…If the fight becomes a scramble-off and a wrestle-off, Islam's gonna come out of it better just cuz he's built for it. Just like [Khamzat] Chimaev would do the same. Whereas GSP utilized the full toolbox of MMA, so he utilized his wrestling and grappling to eventually stand back up and box your head off because you are worried about the takedown… Islam, he will get you down, you ain't getting back up."

Georges St-Pierre lauds Islam Makhachev’s UFC 322 performance

Islam Makhachev put on a wrestling clinic against Jack Della Maddalena to become the new UFC welterweight champion.

However, that wasn’t enough to impress some quarters since Makhachev didn’t get a finish. Georges St-Pierre, however, was impressed by the Russian’s win at UFC 322.

‘Rush’ was speaking on Adin Ross’ podcast and claimed that those who didn’t enjoy Makhachev’s win didn’t understand fighting.

“I was there. I witnessed his performance last Saturday. It was freaking brilliant. Unbelievable. I don’t think he even took a punch. It’s unbelievable. A lot of people that were there [said] ‘oh, it was a decision’ people who say that, I am sorry, because they don’t know the art of fighting. They have no idea, they don’t understand the art of fighting.”

St-Pierre continued:

“His performance was freaking amazing. Yeah the fight was not a flawless victory with a crazy submission or a knockout but going up in a weight class and beating Jack Della Maddalena like he did is freaking hard.”
