Australian BJJ black belt world champion Lachlan Giles treated fans to a high-level showcase of grappling at ONE Fight Night 38: Andrade vs. Baatarkhuu last weekend. And he even showed a move they’ve never seen before.
In fact, it was the first time Giles ever successfully pulled the move off in live competition — a technique he named after himself called ‘The Lachy Lock’ — and it couldn’t have come at a more perfect moment for the 39-year-old.
Giles tapped out Brazilian legend Marcelo Garcia in their lightweight submission grappling match on Saturday, Dec. 6 at Bangkok’s legendary Lumpinee Stadium, shocking the entire BJJ community and the fans in attendance.

Afterward, Giles shared his reaction to the moment with Bangkok Post’s Nick Atkin:
“Never in tournament. I've been doing it a lot in training. Probably the last year or so I've been using this to high effect and I've showed a lot of people and no one else seems to get it. I wanted one to happen in competition and it did.”
Shortly after his historic victory, Giles announced his retirement from professional BJJ competition.

Lachlan Giles all praise for Marcelo Garcia after satisfying win
Lachlan Giles may have defeated an absolute legend in Marcelo Garcia at ONE Fight Night 38: Andrade vs. Baatarkhuu on Prime Video last weekend, but his respect for the BJJ pioneer has not diminished.
In fact, Giles has always held Garcia in high regard, as he shared with The FloGrappling Show before their fight:
“How good Marcelo was—I was competing and there'd be guys that would beat me, there'd be someone that would beat that guy, and then Marcelo would beat them. It was an insane level to me. It still is.”
