Lachlan Giles recalls moment Marcelo Garcia slept on the mats before a match: “He had a little white pillow”

Australian BJJ icon Lachlan Giles knows he will be up against a unique kind of monster when he steps into the ONE Championship ring against Brazilian legend Marcelo Garcia at ONE Fight Night 38: Andrade vs. Baatarkhuu on Prime Video this weekend.

Giles recalled a time watching Garcia compete and he was absolutely shocked that the legend fell asleep right before his big match. He said on The FloGrappling Show:

“I remember watching Marcelo at the Worlds final. He had a little white pillow that he was asleep on, lying next to the mat, eyes closed. They tapped him like, ‘All right, you're ready for the final.’ He gets up off his pillow, walks out, the match starts, and he pulls straight from standing into a butterfly sweep against Lucas Lepri.”

Giles is coming out of retirement to face Garcia in his ONE Championship debut, and he’s looking to score the biggest win of his career yet.

Lachlan Giles noted how calm and serene Marcelo Garcia was

Like a student observing his master, Lachlan Giles watched intently as Marcelo Garcia went through his pre-fight routine, which includes taking a nap.

Now the two are ready to meet at ONE Fight Night 38: Andrade vs. Baatarkhuu on Prime Video this weekend.

Giles said:

“I just remember being so interested in how calm he was, or at least maybe that was something he was doing to calm himself—sleeping or lying down on a pillow, different from the high-energy warm-ups you see a lot of people doing, which is generally recommended. How could he go from calm to suddenly out there with insane timing?”
