Makhachev is set to challenge Jack Della Maddalena's reign over the welterweight division in the main event of this weekend's pay-per-view card. Meanwhile, Prates is set to go up against former welterweight king Leon Edwards. Ahead of their respective bookings, Prates left Makhachev surprised with his food intake.

In an episode of the Anatomy of a Fighter documentary series, Makhachev opened up about seeing Prates eat a Nutella cake and expressed his surprise at the Brazilian's diet:

"Today I saw a guy, Carlos Prates... he was eating Nutella cake at lunchtime in fight week. It’s something I never do. I understand I am bigger than this guy, you know. I don’t touch anything other than what the nutrition team gives me, and I still have to cut so much."

Makhachev is coming off a first-round submission win over Renato Moicano in their lightweight title fight at UFC 311 in January. Meanwhile, Prates most recent fight was an impressive first-round KO win over Geoff Neal at UFC 319 in August.

Makhachev vacated the 155-pound title and moved up to the 170-pound division after Della Maddalena beat Belal Muhammad to win the welterweight championship at UFC 315 in May.

Islam Makhachev addresses potential Ilia Topuria fight while naming preferred next opponent after UFC 322

Islam Makhachev recently addressed a potential fight against Ilia Topuria and named his preferred next opponent after possibly becoming the new UFC welterweight champion this weekend.

After Makhachev vacated the lightweight title, Topuria defeated Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 in June to become the new 155-pound king. Given that many fans wanted to see a Makhachev-Topuria showdown, it appears the Dagestani grappling savant is open to making it happen someday.

During the UFC 322 media day interviews, Makhachev said:

"Ilia is the champion now at lightweight, but we’ll see. He keeps talking about the fight against me. After that fight, let’s see. We will do some things. Because everyone wants this fight, so we will speak about this after."

Makhachev also named Kamaru Usman as his opponent of choice after potentially beating Della Maddalena at UFC 322 and explained why a welterweight title defense against 'The Nigerian Nightmare' made the most sense. He said:

"Who is close [to a title shot]? Shavkat [Rakhmonov] is injured, I heard. Sean Brady? Saturday, I think we’ll know one of the contenders. Why I said [Kamaru] Usman, he’s the biggest name in welterweight. [He] defended the belt. He’s a big name, and he’s in a good position right now. He beat [Joaquin] Buckley, who is one of the contenders also." [H/t: MMA Fighting]
