In this matchup, it’s a battle between established veterans. However, Giles says that BJJ is a young man’s game, and the techniques that are practiced today are far more evolved than when he and Garcia were competing as youngsters.

He told The FloGrappling Show in a guest appearance:

“He [Garcia] has always been pretty innovative though. I find it funny looking online—people are saying it's old school fundamental jiu-jitsu against new school jiu-jitsu. I remember when I was working single leg X and X-guard, watching Marcelo's stuff; this was the newest thing possible. This was considered the new school. You'd get to single X, and people would just fall over because they had no idea what the position was. It's so different now.”

Lachlan Giles says Marcelo Garcia match was one he "can’t refuse"

The opportunity to roll with a legend was simply too good to pass up for Lachlan Giles, who will be coming out of retirement to face BJJ great Marcelo Garcia at ONE Fight Night 38: Andrade vs. Baatarkhuu on Prime Video next weekend.

Giles said:

“I've been happily retired, but I've been offered a match I can't refuse with Marcelo Garcia. He's one of my idols and, you know, the greatest of all time. And I get a chance to compete against someone in my weight division as well. So yeah, I couldn't refuse that one. Probably there'd be no other match I would take except this one.”

This matchup has epic battle written all over it, and we can’t wait to see the two icons go at it in the ONE Championship ring.
