Khabib Nurmagomedov might have retired from fighting, but the warrior spirit still resides in the Russian legend.

The former UFC lightweight champion is now enjoying his role as a coach, and he has already been a part of several big wins.

One of those came at UFC 302, where his close friend Islam Makhachev was defending the lightweight crown. Makhachev was up against a former opponent of Khabib’s, Dustin Poirier, and the fight remains one of the best of Makhachev’s career.

Poirier was submitted in the final round of the title fight. However, the lead-up to the submission had Khabib displaying his passion for MMA and also how supportive he is of Makhachev.

The former champion was sitting with the rest of Makhachev’s coaches and could be seen shouting, celebrating and jumping when Makhachev spun Poirier around to set up the brabo choke.

Makhachev recently shared his reaction to this viral moment from UFC 302 on Instagram stories:

“I like this moment.”

Makhachev and Khabib celebrated this huge win, but another big clash is coming up soon.

Islam Makhachev gears up for tough UFC 322 battle

Makhachev has been in incredible form since losing his only MMA fight, which came at UFC 192 against Adriano Martins. The Russian is on a 15-fight winning streak, including several lightweight title bouts.

Makhachev defended his lightweight title four times but eventually vacated the crown. The Russian star is now set to face Jack Della Maddalena for welterweight gold as he seeks to become the latest two-division UFC champion.

The fight takes place on November 15 and headlines UFC 322. Moving up a division is never easy, and with Maddalena also making his first title defence, it is going to be an uphill battle for Makhachev.

However, the Russian will have Khabib’s backing for this clash. Should ‘The Eagle’ bring the same passion as he did at UFC 302, there could be a new UFC welterweight champion at the end of the event.
