Islam Makhachev recently shared his thoughts on the Khabib Nurmagomedov-Conor McGregor rivalry as Ilia Topuria was brought up.

Topuria is the current UFC lightweight title, a belt that Makhachev vacated as he chases welterweight gold.

There have been some suggestions that the biggest fight the UFC could make right now is Makhachev vs. Topuria, but the pair seems set to fight in different divisions for now.

Makhachev was speaking to Match TV and was asked about how big Topuria had become. He was also asked about the heated Khabib-McGregor rivalry that culminated in the Russian defeating McGregor at UFC 229.

Makhachev claimed that Topuria is one of the biggest names out there in terms of media, but confirmed that there was no chance of another Khabib-McGregor rivalry ever happening again.

“I don't think it's even close. But if you compare interests, he's one of the biggest. If you were to pick someone now, he'd be one of the biggest. And Khabib vs. Conor, I don't think it'll happen again.”

The Khabib-McGregor rivalry culminated in the battle at UFC 229, but the Irishman attacked a bus carrying the Russian and a few others before the fight.

There was a melee in the octagon, too, after Khabib submitted McGregor, which resulted in suspensions and fines for both parties. Khabib and McGregor remain two of the biggest names in the history of the UFC, and no rivalry has come close to the bitterness the pair had.

Islam Makhachev not looking to fight Ilia Topuria at lightweight

While Makhachev prepares for his UFC 322 bout against Jack Della Maddalena and hopes to become a two-division champion, he hasn’t shut the door completely on facing Topuria.

The Russian, in the same interview, was interested in fighting Topuria and believed this is a bout that fans wanted to see.

However, Makhachev wasn’t keen on duking with Topuria in the lightweight division. The former lightweight king was happy staying at 170lbs and enjoying his preparations:

"[I'll be doing it for the fans] How can it be interesting to me? What will I gain by going down to 155 [pounds] and beating Topuria? Win the belt again? I already have it. The fans are mostly interested in it. I'm not interested in cutting down to 155 [pounds] and torturing myself again. I'm interested in fighting at 170 [pounds], eating, enjoying the camp, and fighting."

Topuria could also be in action soon, but reports suggest it would be on the first Paramount card. The current lightweight champion could be defending his belt, but based on Makhachev’s comments, the Russian would not be the one fighting ‘El Matador.’
