Ilia Topuria is still on the quest for the fight that originally brought him to lightweight - a clash against Islam Makhachev. The Dagestani now holds the welterweight strap and seems in no rush to move back down. 'El Matador', however, has a few ideas on how the fight could still be made.

The 28-year-old realizes the promotion wouldn't let him vacate the lightweight title immediately and move up to 170 pounds, and as such, is hoping to defend his title once, preferably against long-time rival Paddy Pimblett.

The Georgian-born Spaniard then envisions himself moving up to welterweight to face Makhachev sometime in the summer. If the UFC deems a welterweight move unrealistic, 'El Matador' has another plan - he wants the promotion to make a new pound-for-pound belt for a catchweight showdown between them.

During an interview with Álvaro Colmenero, Topuria said:

"If the UFC won't let me move up to welterweight to fight Islam, I would really like to fight Islam in the third weight category. Let's see, maybe I'll have one more fight. Then in summer, there's a date when they'll let me move up to welterweight, and I'll fight for the third belt, or maybe they'll create a new belt called the pound-for-pound title at a catchweight. So I'll fight for the pound-for-pound belt. Let's see, plenty of options."

Whether the UFC greenlights the idea or not, 'El Matador' appears confident he has Makhachev's number. After the 34-year-old's welterweight title win over Jack Della Maddalena, Topuria has branded Makhachev a boring fighter and vowed to knock him out if they ever meet in the octagon.

Islam Makhachev recognizes he has a big target on his back now that he is the welterweight champion, with Ilia Topuria and top welterweights, including Kamaru Usman, Carlos Prates, and Michael Morales, eyeing a crack at the gold.

During the post-fight press conference, when a media member informed Makhachev about Topuria deeming him a boring fighter for his performance against Jack Della Maddalena, the Dagestani sent a stoic message:

"No injury, nothing. I don't feel any pain. I'm ready. Who is going to be next? Let's do this. And I will make it easy." [3:13 minutes into the interview]
