Lachlan Giles of Australia watched intently when Marcelo Garcia returned after a 14-year hiatus to submit Masakazu Imanari via north-south choke at ONE 170 in January.

Now, it’s his turn to face the BJJ icon this coming Friday, Dec. 5, at ONE Fight Night 38 on Prime Video inside Bangkok’s Lumpinee Stadium.

The legendary Garcia does possess an arsenal of fearsome signature moves that revolutionized grappling. From his butterfly guard, to the ‘Marcelo-tine’, to his innovative arm-drags – the list goes on.

But Giles is mostly wary of the Brazilian’s crushing north-south choke, a submission he perfected with remarkable consistency.

‘Marcelinho’ used that patented move throughout his distinguished career, which includes four ADCC World Championships and five IBJJF World Titles.

Seeing Garcia bring out that iconic chokehold against Imanari left Giles in awe.

Appearing on The FloGrappling Show, the Aussie icon broke down what makes the north-south choke so effective when Garcia performs it:

"It's definitely less used [the North South Choke]. Marcelo seems highly effective at getting the finish with it, whereas you don't see too many other grapplers who can hit it with as much consistency. I think he just spent so long doing it and developing it that it requires a lot of time invested to get the finish."

Lachlan Giles is making sure to fine-tune the techniques he has in his arsenal.

'The Giant Killer' told ONE Championship in his pre-event interview:

"My entries are good, and I can attack the upper and lower body from guard, good toe holds, shotgun armbar. I've been working even triangle entries when someone's defending K-guard attacks into the legs."

One thing's for sure, fans will witness a BJJ masterclass when these two legends collide this Friday.
