Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria are two of UFC's hottest commodities, so it comes as little surprise that the MMA world is eager to see the pair eventually duke it out in the octagon. However, it might be more complicated given the current UFC landscape.

Both Makhachev and Topuria are two-division champions, with the Dagestani recently winning the 170-pound gold at UFC 322, and 'El Matador' capturing the lightweight strap at UFC 317.

While the quest for a second belt was the primary motivation behind their move-up, an equally significant and common factor that made the decision easy was the growing struggle to make weight in their previous divisions.

Makhachev, who has settled well into welterweight, doesn't seem eager to entertain a lightweight clash with Topuria. Addressing Russian media, the sambo maestro said:

"It would have to be a very good offer for me to start cutting back to 155 [pounds], because I'm not young in this sport anymore, and every weight cut takes years off your health. It's not as easy as before to cut weight."

While Makhachev isn't too thrilled about going down in weight, all might not be lost. 'El Matador' has time and again proclaimed that he is game to face the pound-for-pound king at 170 pounds.

Furthermore, even UFC stars are campaigning for the match-up, with Colby Covington recently picking Topuria as the perfect antithesis to Makhachev's Dagestani grappling.

Colby Covington wants Islam Makhachev vs. Ilia Topuria next

Colby Covington was thoroughly impressed by Islam Makhachev's domination of Jack Della Maddalena. However, it is not a seasoned welterweight that 'Chaos' wants to see paired with Makhachev next, it's Ilia Topuria.

Speaking with The Schmo after UFC 322, the former interim welterweight champion claimed that stopping him from getting his grappling going was the blueprint to victory over Makhachev. Something 'Chaos' believes Topuria is equipped to do:

"You are going to have to stuff his takedowns and make him work like Volkanovski did in that first fight. Stuff the takedowns and brawl with him. I think Topuria is the perfect fight for him. I think that fight needs to happen. Topuria has a low center of gravity, so he's going to be very hard to take down. When [Makhachev] is not taking him down, [Topuria] is going to be punching him with all he's got. So, I'm hoping that the UFC makes that fight next."
