Dvalishvili went up against Yan in an exciting bantamweight title rematch at UFC 323 last weekend at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Given Dvalishvili's dominant unanimous decision win over Yan in their first encounter at UFC Fight Night 221 in March 2023, many expected 'The Machine' to emerge victorious again. However, Yan came out guns blazing in the rematch and pushed Dvalishvili to his limits.

After a five-round barnburner, Yan got his hand raised via unanimous decision and reclaimed the 135-pound title. While most believe that Yan dominated Dvalishvili and may have won all five rounds, Dvalishvili's coach thinks the fight was a closely contested affair.

In an interview with Submission Radio, Wood shared his take on the fight and said:

"I'm usually pretty objective and very aware of where the fight is directed... Maybe I wasn’t taking damage into consideration. Maybe I got caught up in the fact that I know Merab, and he wasn’t hurt in some of those things, those cuts and the blood and stuff."

He added:

"I do remember, and I do recall thinking that we had [rounds] one and two, and I know that [round] three was close. I would give [rounds] four and five to him [Yan] hands down. I have to go back and rewatch it. I know everything was close, and it was a lot closer than I expected or thought it would be."

Coach John Wood dismisses notion of Merab Dvalishvili possibly taking Petr Yan lightly before UFC 323

In the same interview, John Wood spoke about Merab Dvalishvili's training process for the Petr Yan rematch and dismissed speculations about 'The Machine' potentially having taken 'No Mercy' lightly.

Clarifying that team Dvalishvili trained as hard as ever for the fight, the veteran coach said:

"No, I do not think there was any overlooking at all. I have some of my opinions that I would gladly share after I speak to Merab... It would be disrespectful to Petr and his team to say we overlooked him because the work was done. We trained for him, and we trained very, very hard. There was nothing different."

He added:

"There are some things that played into a factor that maybe made it look that way, but there was definitely no overlooking that man. Everybody knows how dangerous Petr is, and it would be disrespectful to him and his team to even think that. Merab is not a guy that takes people lightly, and I am not a coach who takes people lightly. Every fight at the top level is against the next most dangerous fighter in the world."
