ONE flyweight submission grappling king ‘Baby Shark’ Diogo Reis is a huge admirer of Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend Marcelo Garcia. But it wasn’t until meeting him at ONE Fight Night 38: Andrade vs. Baatarkhuu on Prime Video last week that the two became close friends.

Where many would expect the 42-year-old to wallow in defeat, Reis was instead pleasantly surprised to hear motivation from Garcia’s end. ‘Baby Shark’ told Bangkok Post’s Nick Atkin:

“No, he said, he's going to - he's mad because of the fight because he's a competitor. Everybody knows nobody wants to come to fight and lose. But he said, no, I'm going to come back and compete. I'm going to come back to the competition. So let's see.”

Garcia has vowed to return to competition and resume his ONE Championship campaign. The veteran appears to be more driven than ever to recapture his previous glory.

Diogo Reis says it was a battle of modern vs. old school jiu-jitsu in Marcelo Garcia’s loss to Lachlan Giles

‘Baby Shark’ Diogo Reis admits he was surprised to see Marcelo Garcia tap out to Lachlan Giles, but he understands it was because of a difference in jiu-jitsu philosophies.

Garcia is considered one of the pioneers of modern-day BJJ, but he stopped competing over a decade ago due to a battle with cancer. Now that he’s back, Reis says BJJ has changed significantly.

‘Baby Shark’ said:

“I think this time Marcelo stopped. Of course, he's still training, keeping shape and everything. But you know the difference between nowadays and before, it's totally different because people at that time didn't have so many good grapplers like nowadays. Lachlan was, you know, very comfortable in my vision. Because I was watching the fight. He's really comfortable and really knows what Marcelo wants to do. And also his leg in the tournament is really good.”
