Georges St-Pierre pointed to a surprising name from another division while recently talking about Khamzat Chimaev’s next real test.

St-Pierre believes Kamaru Usman remains the toughest stylistic challenge for Chimaev. Their first encounter at UFC 294 remains a topic of debate to this day.

Usman, despite accepting the fight on 10 days’ notice and moving up in weight, managed to keep the fight competitive across all three rounds in a majority decision loss. Chimaev controlled the opening frame with strong wrestling pressure. However, the momentum changed once he began to slow.

Discussing Chimaev's dominance and potential matchups in a recent interview with Helen Yee, St-Pierre said:

"I think one guy that could’ve been a threat stylistically was Bo Nickal, but he lost. Another guy that I thought would’ve caused problems for Chimaev was [Robert] Whittaker, but Khamzat broke his jaw. He seems really unstoppable now. When I watched his fight against Kamaru Usman, Usman took that fight on short notice and did pretty well. Let’s imagine Usman had a full camp to prepare and they fought five rounds."

Chimaev has looked dominant at middleweight and recently captured the 185-pound title with a lopsided win against Dricus du Plessis. While he has been targeting a fight with Alex Pereira, top-ranked contender Nassourdine Imavov has made a strong case for the title shot next.

Usman’s win over Joaquin Buckley earlier this year pushed him back into the mix at 170 pounds. He believes he can reclaim the welterweight title and win the middleweight belt before stepping away from the sport.

Speaking in a recent interview with TMZ Sports, Usman said:

“The storybook would be to go and grab this title [welterweight], then go and grab the other title [middleweight]. If Khamzat Chimaev is still the champion there, I think that’s an intriguing fight, that’s a compelling fight that everybody would want to see. On a full training camp, to go out and challenge him."

He added:

“I think that’s a tremendous one. You know, two-division champ, that’s the only thing that is not on the resume is the two-division champion. Go out and get that, and at that point, you look back and go, ah, what else is there to do?”
