Brazilian jiu-jitsu phenom Diogo Reis captured the vacant ONE flyweight submission grappling world championship at ONE Fight Night 38 on Dec. 5.

According to ‘Baby Shark’, he couldn’t have done it without some infusion of wisdom from arguably the greatest BJJ competitor of all time, Marcelo Garcia.

Reis put on a dominant showing against Daiki Yonekura of Japan, outclassing the Japanese star with his elite passing and pressure at Bangkok's Lumpinee Stadium. Garcia also competed on the same event, succumbing to a kneebar to fellow BJJ icon Lachlan Giles earlier on the card.

But before their respective matches, the pair of generational talents had some time to train together. In his post-event interview with Nick Atkin of the Bangkok Post, Reis said Garcia helped sharpen his game.

“It was a great experience training with Marcelo. He's a good guy. Also, not just training in jiu-jitsu, but also, you know, mentality— he shared his routine when he was a competitor. So it was great having this meeting, you know, with the guy from the old times, new times, because we could share training also. And not just jiu-jitsu, but he's a really good guy, good energy, simple guy.”

Diogo Reis breaks down his passing clinic at ONE Fight Night 38

'Baby Shark' Diogo Reis lived up to his nickname and drowned Daiki Yonekura in deep waters to claim 26 pounds of gold.

The new flyweight submission grappling king wrote on Instagram how he managed to pull off the magnificent feat:

"How did I use this crossing the knee passage? 🤔 My opponent when he was on the ground guarding, he got very close and hard to connect with him. However, when he sat down, the area of his chest became very exposed [arms and legs] facilitating the fencing and being able to cross immediately and reach the guard crossing."

North American viewers can catch the complete ONE Fight Night 38 card available on demand through Prime Video.
