ONE Championship lightweight grappler Lachlan Giles is riding back off into the sunset, following a successful one-off fight out of retirement. And he has a message for the next generation.
The 39-year-old returned to competition at ONE Fight Night 38: Andrade vs. Baatarkhuu on Prime Video last weekend, where he defeated Brazilian legend Marcelo Garcia via submission in front of thousands of fans at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
Giles says he’s going back into retirement after achieving a career-defining win, but he wanted to impart some wisdom for the young grapplers out there.

He told Nick Atkin of Bangkok Post:
“I mean, not everyone has to. There's so many people in jiu-jitsu who are not trying to compete and be the best in ADCC and so on. I think it's a slow process. Probably overall too many people train hard and then you have a short career.”
Giles added:
“I assume if you're training now, you want to be training in 20 years time as well. You should go lighter, focus on the technical, methodical side of it and eventually you get really good that way anyway. I think it's a bit slower than if you're spazzing around and risking injury a lot. That maybe gets you winning at tournaments a little faster, but then also you break down.”
Giles wants the young competitors to take it easy and preserve their health, so they can continue training jiu-jitsu for the rest of their lives.

Lachlan Giles reveals strategy for Marcelo Garcia
Lachlan Giles is happy to get the submission victory over Marcelo Garcia at ONE Fight Night 38: Andrade vs. Baatarkhuu on Prime Video. And he willingly shared his game plan for beating the legend, it includes pulling guard offensively.
The Australian said:
“Very happy with my own performance. We started the match, and I knew I wanted to pull guard. That was the last thing that I didn't know how to do because it's the one thing in ONE that's different, it has to be an aggressive guard pull where you try to get an immediate attack going, which is different to all other rule sets.”
