In the latest Minecraft Java Edition snapshot 25w45a, Mojang decided to add various new environmental attributes to the game. These new technical features will officially arrive with the Mounts of Mayhem game drop. This latest snapshot, 25w45a, introduces new environment attributes, especially under the visual and gameplay namespace. These directly affect how the world is rendered or how light/sky behaves.

Environment attributes are basically parameters that the game uses per dimension, biome, timeline, etc., to define how things look or behave in the environment. So rather than “hard-coded” visuals for everything, you can now data-drive things like sky colour, sun/moon angles, star brightness, etc.

Here are some of the key new attributes added in this snapshot, and how they change the graphics and mood of the game world:

  • minecraft:visual/sunrise_sunset_color - Controls the color and intensity of the sunrise and sunset effect. If fully transparent, you might have no visible sunrise/sunset effect.
  • minecraft:visual/sun_angle/moon_angle/star_angle - The angle in degrees of the sun, moon, or stars, from east to west, with 0 being “directly up”.
  • minecraft:visual/moon_phase - Tracks which phase the moon is in (full moon, new moon, etc).
  • minecraft:visual/star_brightness - A float between 0 and 1, controlling how bright stars are in the sky
  • minecraft:visual/sky_light_color - The colour of sky light (for blocks that receive sky light)
  • minecraft:visual/sky_light_factor - The multiplier/brightness factor for sky light.

In simple terms, these new environment attributes will allow modders and experienced players to create unique environments based on biomes. The angle of the sun, the color of the sunset and sunrises, and other aspects can also be altered now.

This will not only give Mojang more graphical options to perfectly implement Vibrant Visuals to Minecraft Java, but it will be a massive win for the modding community as well.
