Latest Minecraft Java snapshot adds new zombie nautilus variant

In the latest Minecraft Java snapshot 25w45a, Mojang added a brand new variant for zombie nautilus. This creature is a new mob that will be added with the Mounts of Mayhem game drop that was announced in the second Minecraft Live of 2025 on September. While the zombie nautilus is already a variant of regular nautilus, the developers decided to add a variant of zombie nautilus itself, called the coral zombie nautilus.

In the snapshot 25w45a for Mounts of Mayhem game drop, Mojang introduced a new coral zombie nautilus, a new variant of the regular zombie variant.

The coral zombie nautilus will spawn in warm ocean biomes, completely replacing zombie nautilus. Though every single property of the new natilus variant will be identical, they will look slightly different from one another.

While the regular zombie nautilus' shell is covered in seagrass or kelp, the coral zombie nautilus' shell is covered in coral. This is clearly because they spawn in warm oceans, where coral reefs usually generate.

Of course, coral zombie nautilus will be a lot rarer since most ocean biomes are colder or temperate.

What does zombie nautilus do in Minecraft?

Zombie nautilus almost always spawn with a drowned zombie as their mount. When an drowned zombie spawns in an ocean biome, either naturally or as part of an ocean ruin, and is wielding a trident in its main hand, it has a 50% chance to spawn as a jockey on a zombie nautilus. They do not spawn if the game is set to peaceful mode.

When ridden by a drowned, the zombie nautilus movement is controlled by the jockey. When the drowned zombie is dismounted or killed, the zombie nautilus becomes neutral and can be tamed and ridden by the player.

These undead variants of nautilus cannot breed and drop rotten flesh and a few XP orbs upon death. They can also be healed using various fish, both raw and cooked.
