The South African could only chase the match thereafter, with the Indian veteran taking the first game 7-4. Abhay Singh and Dewald van Niekerk indulged in a flurry of marathon rallies, enthralling the crowd at the Express Avenue Mall. The closeness and intensity of the contest did not reflect in the scoreline, however, with Abhay Singh prevailing 7-1.

The South African player led 4-2 in the second game, only for the on-court lights to go out at the venue. With the lights back on after a nearly ten-minute delay. Dewald made it to game-ball at 6-5, but Abhay Singh forced sudden death by levelling things up at 6-6.

Hayley Ward went up against teen sensation Anahat Singh in the second women's fixture.

Ward, who has played Anahat extensively in the past, took a 3-0 lead much to the crowd's disbelief, but the 17-year-old rallied to win seven points on the trot to manufacture a stunning 7-3 win. The second game also went the way of the Indian prodigy 7-3, before she finished the contest with a 7-4 triumph in the third game.
