She has consistently broken the Under-20 National Record several times, pushing the limits of the sport. Her amazing personal best throw of 57.19 meters secured her place as the country's rising star.

Carrying this strong form into the 2025 season, Deepika continued her record-breaking journey. The recent Khelo India University Games (KIUG), Rajasthan became the stage for her next major record breaking throw. She won the gold medal and threw the javelin a massive 55.53 meters, which was long enough to completely shatter the previous KIUG meet record.

She represented Chandigarh University at Khelo India University Games and helped that improve their position at the medal tally. This victory, proving her consistency in a high-pressure competition, confirms her talent and shows that she is ready to represent India on even bigger world stages.

Deepika’s journey from a young talent to a record-breaking champion is strongly supported by her coach, Hanuman Singh. The coach has been a key figure, ensuring strict discipline and helping her to improve her throwing technique constantly. Their successful partnership is built on trust and a shared goal of achieving international greatness.

Deepika and Hanuman Singh look ahead to more after success at Khelo India University Games 2025

The dedication, the hard work, and the future plans of this unstoppable team - Hanuman Singh and Deepika detailed it all in an exclusive interview with Sportskeeda on the sidelines of the Khelo India University Games, Rajasthan.

“Deepika played Khelo India University Games as a practice session,” stated Hanuman Singh. "Athletes need a gap between competitions, and we are treating this and the All India University Games as practice sessions and a break for Deepika before opening competitions from March 2026. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has provided a very good calendar for 2026, and there are many competitions being held near Haryana. AFI is conducting more than 40 competitions next year, which will help Deepika compete well every 2–3 weeks and set new targets for herself.”

On being asked how he felt about Deepika continuously breaking records and what her future plans were after Khelo India University Games, Hanuman Singh stated:

“Deepika is performing very well in every competition. She is improving her throw in every competition. There is not a single year where she has not improved from the last one. Last year she touched 55m, this year she touched 57m, and we are looking to cross the 60m barrier in 2026. We will work more on her technique and strength for even better results.”

He further said:

“Deepika is now working on her body weight. Earlier she used to compete in the under 60 kg category, but this time she competed in 63 kg category. We are further looking to get her weight around 65-68 kg for better throw performance.”

Hanuman Singh also praised government initiatives like Khelo India and Fit India as great platforms for athletes to practice their routines and prepare themselves for future competitions. He also said that he would like to see more athletes participating in Khelo India next year and suggested that the government should immediately start the competition within a few months of the All India University Games.

This is the off-season where many athletes take rest. There were only 8 participants in the Javelin Throw event, which is still higher compared to other athletic sports, but he wants the government to give a chance to more athletes to enhance the competition.

On being asked his words of advice for youth looking to enter javelin as a sport, he said:

“Javelin is doing very well, and people have started watching javelin just like they watch cricket. One of the major reasons for this is Neeraj Chopra, who made people fall in love with Javelin Throw. Earlier there used to be only one 80m thrower in javelin, then came a time where 2-3 people used to throw above 80m, but now the 80m mark has become common, which shows that youth is interested in this sport and working hard for this, which is a very good thing. The only thing youth needs to work on is their training balance to reduce injury chances. Athletes should work on muscle strengthening along with weight training to reduce chances of injury.”

Hanuman Singh also elaborated further about Deepika's future plans and said:

“We are working step-by-step and not directly looking at senior championships. We want to win one competition at a time and don't want to create pressure on Deepika on thinking directly of the Olympics. I want to first break every junior record, and then think of senior championships. I want to see some other Indian girl cross the 60m mark soon, taking inspiration from Annu Rani.”
