Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat announced her return, reversing the retirement decision ahead of the Los Angeles (LA) Olympics 2028. Vinesh put up a post on her official X handle on Friday, December 12.Notably, Vinesh Phogat had announced her retirement after the heartbreaking disqualification at the Paris Olympics 2024 during her gold medal bout. She even entered politics soon after stepping away. However, she has now decided to return and compete for the LA Olympics 2028."People kept asking if Paris was the end. For a long time, I didn't have the answer. I needed to step away from the mat, from the pressure, from the expectations, even from my own ambitions. For the first time in years, I allowed myself to breathe. I took time to understand the weight of my journey the highs, the heartbreaks, the sacrifices, the versions of me the world never saw. And somewhere in that reflection, I found the truth, I still love this sport. I still want to compete. In that silence, I found something I'd forgotten 'the fire never left'. It was only buried under exhaustion and noise. The discipline, the routine, the fight... it's in my system. No matter how far I walked away, a part of me stayed on the mat," she wrote."So here I am, stepping back toward LA28 with a heart that's unafraid and a spirit that refuses to bow. And this time, I'm not walking alone my son is joining my team, my biggest motivation, my little cheerleader on this road to the LA Olympics," she added. She currently serves as the MLA of Julana constituency in Haryana. The wrestler had won the Haryana assembly election from the Julana constituency in Jind. Why was Vinesh Phogat disqualified?Vinesh Phogat had become the first Indian female wrestler to make it to the gold medal bout at the Olympics. She defeated four-time world champion Yui Susaki to enter the final. However, she was found to be 100 grams overweight on the morning before the final. She was hence disqualified. As per the United World Wrestling (UWW) regulations, if an athlete fails a weigh-in at any stage, they are not only disqualified, but all previous results are not counted as well. Therefore, Vinesh Phogat did not even receive the silver medal. While she had challenged the decision and pleaded for the silver medal at least, her plea was rejected. She had to return empty-handed despite a historic display.
