The Indian boys won the FIH Junior Hockey World Cup bronze medal for the first time with a 4-2 win against Argentina at Chennai's Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Wednesday (December 10). The two-time champions displayed grit and character to come from behind in the fourth quarter after Argentina had got themselves a two-goal cushion.Nicolas Rodriguez scored from the spot before Santiago Fernandez doubled the lead for the 2021 champions off a goal from open play late in the third quarter.Ankit Pal pulled one back for India with a deflection off a penalty corner early in the fourth quarter, before Manmeet Singh scored the equaliser with an identical rebound strike. A penalty stroke helped India take the lead before Anmol Ekka sealed the deal off a penalty corner with no goalkeeper under the bar for Argentina.A speedy run from Nicolas Rodriguez resulted in a penalty corner for a clumsy challenge, which was upgraded to a penalty stroke. Rodriguez took the stroke himself and made no mistake from the spot in the third minute.The Argentinians had the better of the exchanges with the Indian defence kept on their toes in the opening eight minutes of the Junior Hockey World Cup final.Bruno Correa scampered into the attacking circle in the 19th minute but failed to find a teammate in the vicinity of the Indian goal. Birthday boy Dilraj Singh's shot on target was well saved by Joaquin Ruiz a minute later.Santiago Fernandez scored a peach of a goal from open play in the 44th minute, picking up an angled ball played in from the baseline before beating Prince Deep Singh in a flash.Anmol Ekka's drag flick was deflected in by Ankit Pal, positioned right in front of the goalkeeper in the 49th minute.Arshdeep Singh manufactured a penalty corner with a speedy run. Manmeet Singh levelled things up with a similar deflection off a drag flick in the 52nd minute.Sharda Nand Tiwari scored off a penalty stroke in the 57th minute to give India the lead for the first time in the contest.Mateo Serrano worked a penalty corner for his side in the 58th minute, but Prince Deep Singh stood tall in goal.India earned a penalty corner immediately after. A gold medal came India's way in the very next edition of the tournament in 2001, with India trouncing Argentina 6-1 in the final. Deepak Thakur ended up as the highest scorer in Hobart, with Devesh Chauhan winning the Best Goalkeeper Award.Also in the gold-medal winning Indian side were young stars Jugraj Singh and Prabhjot Singh.After a 15-year-long wait, India won gold in the 2016 Junior Hockey World Cup in Lucknow. PR Sreejesh's team have now clinched the bronze medal for India at home. The Indians had lost the bronze-medal game in 2021 and 2023.
