A marauding German side silenced the vociferous Chennai crowd with a 5-1 drubbing of India in the semifinal of the FIH Junior Hockey World Cup at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Sunday (December 7). Down by five unanswered goals, the beleaguered home side finally pulled one back in the final quarter after being comprehensively outplayed by the ruthless Germans.

By the time the Indians began to find their footing late in the game, the contest was well out of reach of PR Sreejesh's team, who allowed the defending champions far too many unchallenged entries into the striking circle.

Seven-time champions Germany will take on Spain in the final of the Junior Hockey World Cup on Wednesday. India will take on Argentina in the bronze-medal game.

The Germans paid a visit to the Indian circle in the very first minute, but Justus Warweg's reverse from a narrow angle was off target. A scrambling clearance by Prince Deep Singh denied an onrushing Warweg in the third minute.

Ben Hasbach's tomahawk from the middle of the circle was stopped by an overworked Prince Deep Singh in the eighth minute.

A clumsy challenge enabled the Germans to earn a penalty corner following a run from Paul Babic in the 14th minute. The short corner led to a penalty stroke, and although Prince Deep Singh dived the right way, he failed to stop Lukas Kossel's effort from the spot.

A fortuitous deflection off an Indian defender's foot enabled a German cross to find its way into the back of the net a minute later, with Wex Titus being awarded the goal.

Lukas Kossel foxed the Indian runners with a well-directed drag flick in the 30th minute. The hosts went in for the long breather of their Junior Hockey World Cup semifinal, trailing by three goals.

Prince Deep Singh was comprehensively beaten with three German players converging upon the Indian circle in tandem as part of a brilliant team effort in the 40th minute. Jonas von Gersum was credited with the goal from open play, even as a hushed silence descended in the stands.

A scintillating goal from open play from Ben Hasbach added to India's misery as the German striker sprinted into the Indian circle all by himself in the 49th minute with the Indian goalie beaten all ends up.

A deflection off the goalkeeper's pads ended up in the roof of the German net even as India pulled one back off a penalty corner in the 51st minute.

Back in 2021, the then-defending champions India went down to Germany 2-4 in the semifinals of the FIH Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar.

The Germans proved to be India's nemesis yet again in the semifinals in 2023, with Ben Hasbach scoring a brace while also helping his team cruise to a 4-1 win in Kuala Lumpur. Germany went on to reign supreme in the Malaysian capital following a 2-1 win against France in the final.

Hasbach was on the scoresheet again as India failed to get past Germany in Chennai, enabling the European giants a shot at a possible eighth Junior Hockey World Cup title.
