Former GTA co-writer Dan Houser recently talked about why he left Rockstar Games. He started the company with his brother, Sam Houser, back in 1998. Over the years, they worked on some of the most controversial yet influential video games in history, building a massive fanbase. However, Dan left Rockstar in 2020, but the reason hadn't been revealed until recently. In a recent interview on the BBC Radio Front Row show, Houser mentioned that the sheer size of modern projects by Rockstar took a toll on him. He explained that writing hundreds of thousands of dialogues and compiling them over the course of several years felt tough. When asked why he'd left Rockstar in 2020, Dan said:“Because the projects were really long and tough and take a long time to make. It can be a tough journey getting things at that scale with that many moving parts finished. You’ve got 450,000 lines of dialogue and equal number of parts of other things all trying to assemble itself. It’s this huge production experience. That swallows all of your time for many years at a time and I don’t know if I had another one of those games in me.” [Timestamp - 4:05]Prior to this, Houser spoke about the massive scale of previous titles like GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, which boosted Rockstar's popularity. He also appreciated the developers who worked on these titles alongside him, from whom he received great ideas.“I think the scale of the last couple (GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2) were beyond any imagining; I worked with incredibly talented people so thinking that group, me piggybacking off their vast brains, could do something amazing that’s why I worked there.” [Timestamp - 3:40]Dan Houser is confident of GTA 6's successIn a previous interview with IGN, Dan Houser talked about Rockstar's next massive title, GTA 6. He humorously joked that he has worked on so many GTA titles that the world would not want another one from him. He confirmed that he did not work on GTA 6, but feels confident that the game would be a success. He said:“In a way. I mean, I think it's a great privilege to have worked on something that big. I wrote the last 10 or 11 of them. I think the world's probably had enough GTA from me. There’s always a new story. It won’t be a story I wrote or a character set I developed, but I think it will be exciting. The game will be great, I’m sure.” [Timestamp - 1:10:30]GTA 6 is set to release on November 19, 2026. As of now, Rockstar Games has only shared two trailers, 70 screenshots, artworks, and a few details about main characters in the game.Check out our other content:"The company nearly imploded": Dan Houser on how GTA San Andreas' Hot Coffee feature stirred massive controversy"It was this thing where we hadn't done it": GTA 4 co-writer Dan Houser explains why he could not kill Niko Bellic at the end"An update of classic film marketing": GTA's former co-creator Dan Houser explains Rockstar Games' marketing strategy"There was so much Americana": Rockstar's co-founder Dan Houser on why GTA was always based in the U.S.A.
