After the first day, McIlroy was tied for 57th place with a one-under-par score. On the second day, the 20-time DP World Tour winner started his game with consistent pars in the front nine and the first few holes of the back nine. However, he encountered a massive setback while playing on the par-5 fourteenth.

McIlroy's shot caused the ball to get stuck under a bush, and the veteran golfer was spotted stooping down to rescue it. His attempt to clear the golf ball seemed promising till the brisk iron swipe missed the target completely. Rory McIlroy appeared in disbelief as his swing hit nothing but the air above the ball.

McIlroy also stated that he tried to retrieve the golf ball following Seve Ballesteros' technique. The two-time PGA Championship winner told the reporters at Melbourne GC:

"Not one of my finer moments, but nice to bounce back after that and play like I did the last few holes.
"I felt like I could get in there really low, like Seve used to, flick a four iron and just get back into play, and on the way down caught a branch and obviously just completely went over the ball."

The former World No. 1 also revealed that he was 'delighted' to finish the way he did after carding the bogey on the fourteenth. He further revealed his confidence to get "right back into the tournament" despite sitting seven shots behind Crown Australian Open leaders Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and Daniel Rodrigues.
