On Wednesday, December 4, Mickelson reshared a clip on X, featuring Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey discussing his city’s stance on immigration. In the original clip, Frey said that the city would not cooperate with ICE and briefly spoke in Somali. Along with the clip, Mickelson wrote:

“The US is way too lenient on illegal immigration. Singapore 6 months in prison, caning, THEN deportation Malaysia 1-5 years in prison, caning, then deportation Qatar 3 years in prison, forced labor, then deportation Russia 2 years in prison, forced labor, then deportation N Korea no deportation, just execution Hungary 8 years in prison, then deportation S Africa 1 year in prison, then deportation Japan 3 years in prison, then deportation Countless more like these”

The comments come as attention grows on Somali immigrants in Minneapolis. St. Paul. City officials said on Tuesday that they support the local Somali community after media reports suggested that ICE has increased enforcement in the area. The New York Times reported that hundreds of undocumented Somali immigrants could be affected, with roughly 100 officers deployed to Minnesota for the operation.

Frey and St. Paul officials said that they have received no official notice from the federal government and could not verify the reports. Still, a local immigrant rights group said it received information about five arrests in the past two days, and St. Paul police noted an increase in calls related to immigration activity.

The controversy follows comments by President Donald Trump, who recently addressed Somali immigration during a White House cabinet meeting, linking the community to alleged financial fraud cases in Minnesota and reiterating his long-standing opposition to Somali immigration.

Phil Mickelson is known for expressing his opinions on social media. Earlier, he also clarified that he did not plan to run for president in 2028, as he felt that his political views were too extreme.

Phil Mickelson says politics isn’t for him

Phil Mickelson has made it clear that he has no plans to enter politics, despite occasional social media theories. The LIV Golfer responded to a viral video of a Georgia homeowner who shot three teens during a break-in. He praised the act as self-defense and used the incident to highlight his strong views on protecting citizens and property.

When a fan suggested he run for president in 2028, Phil Mickelson declined, saying his opinions were “too extreme” for political office. He explained:

“I don’t feel qualified for politics and my views can be extreme before leveling out in the middle. Meaning I would give every citizen the right to protect themselves, their property, their business, and others by any means necessary. If the DA were to charge anyone for doing so, I’d immediately pardon them. This is too extreme for CA and the country but I feel extremes are necessary in order to balance things out.”
