OWGR chief Trevor Immelman said they are carefully working on reviewing LIV Golf's application. His comments came after the league's recent change from a 54-hole to a 72-hole format.

Last month, LIV Golf announced it was switching from 54 holes to the traditional 72-hole format. The announcement was made a few months after the league submitted a fresh application for OWGR points.

Speaking on the recent ranking developments, Trevor Immelman gave an update on the current status.

"We found out right before everybody else did. Scott O'Neil let us know that they were going to make the change to 72 holes," he said as per Golf Channel. "I guess they feel like they're going to be evolving their league is going to be evolving. They're going to be playing 72 holes, their fields are going to be growing, and so he gave us the heads-up on that."

"For us, the board has really been working hard and has been super involved in checking out the application they put in back in June. We’ve been working really closely with LIV to make sure that we handle this in the appropriate fashion, with as much integrity as possible."

The OWGR chief added that the dialogue had been back and forth, constant and in 'great spirit.'

"I've enjoyed getting to know Scott O'Neil. He’s a passionate guy, very passionate about the LIV Golf League. While there’s been no decision just yet, we’ll have to see what happens in the future," he added.

What's stopping LIV Golf from getting OWGR points?

For the uninitiated, LIV applied for OWGR points a couple of years ago but was denied ranking points after not meeting the expected criteria. The players were also promised that things would get sorted, but nothing positive has happened in these four years.

The first thing stopping LIV's ranking quest was the format itself, but now they have changed it to 72 holes, which gives them slight hope. The other important point included promotion, which is why the league launched the Promotions event a couple of years ago. When started, it had three spots up for grabs, but the latest edition has been reduced to just one spot.

Currently, LIV has Tyrrell Hatton as their highest-ranked player in the OWGR. The Englishman is currently ranked 20th, thanks to his decent results in majors as well as the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. Bryson DeChambeau is ranked 27th due to his three top tens in four majors.
