The first edition of the Skins Game took place on November 27, 1983, the Sunday after Thanksgiving. The event, played in Scottsdale, saw Gary Player win $170,000 after competing alongside Tom Watson, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. The franchise continued through 2008 before its last stop, only to return 17 years later.

Pro Shop and its president Chad Mumm, producer of the Netflix golf docu-series ‘Full Swing’, is bringing back the Skins Game this weekend. The event will air on Nov. 28, Black Friday morning after Thanksgiving on Prime Video featuring US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, two-time major champion Xander Schauffele, European Ryder Cup stars Tommy Fleetwood and Shane Lowry. Ahead of the event, Mumm has come out to reveal that the ‘iconic moments’ from 1980s editions is among the main reasons he decided to bring the contest back.

Speaking about the special event sponsored by Capital One, the producer said that “golf needs to land back on that Thanksgiving weekend” after watching previous iterations of the contest.

Revealing reasons behind the Skins Game comeback, Chad Mumm said on this week’s episode of The Loop podcast:

“I kept seeing moments go viral on social media from Skins games in the 1980s, so many iconic moments. I was like, I want to bring it back… For me growing up, Thanksgiving was always football, Charlie Brown, turkey and watching golf in the desert. I feel like golf needs to land back on that Thanksgiving weekend.”

The Skins Game format explored

The 2025 edition of the Skins Game will be played from 9 am ET until 1 pm ET on Black Friday. The match will take place at Panther National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, a course co-designed by Jack Nicklaus and Justin Thomas. Notably, the event will be streamed amid Amazon Prime’s Black Friday football game between the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles. This will also act as a precursor to a host of college football games beginning at noon.

As for the format, each hole of the game is worth one skin (one point). The player winning a hole outright claims the skin. Moreover, a tie between two or more players will see the skin carry over to the next hole. Notably, the rollover continues until one player wins a hole outright. A single hole could be worth five, six or more skins if the rollover continues long enough.

The Skins Game ran for the longest time as an unofficial money event on the PGA Tour. Notably, K. J. Choi won the 2008 edition of the contest beating two-time defending champion Stephen Ames. The South Korean golfer bagged a $415,000 prize paycheck.

This week’s iteration of the competition will see Xander Schauffele, Tommy Fleetwood, Keegan Bradley and Shane Lowry tee off with a ‘reverse purses.’ For the unversed, each of the four players will start the Friday outing with $1 million in the bank, which will then be adjusted based on them winning or losing a hole.
