The Olympic Games have always been a major attraction for fans. In 2028, the International event will be underway in Los Angeles from July 19 to 29. However, the schedule of the LA Olympics will clash with several golf majors played in July, including The Open.

The R&A confirmed on December 8 that the 156th edition of the major will be played on a different date. This rescheduling will remain effective for the AIG Women's Open and the ISPS Handa Senior Open as well. Check out the new schedule of the three majors:

  1. The Open: July 30th - August 6th (2028)
  2. The ISPS HANDA Senior Open: August 7th - 13th (2028)
  3. The AIG Women's Open: August 14th - 20th (2028)

The R&A also issued an official post on X about the rescheduling of the majors and wrote:

"New dates have been confirmed for The Open, AIG Women's Open, and ISPS HANDA Senior Open in 2028. The championships are moving back for that year alone to accommodate the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles..."

The rescheduling also came months after a new mixed-team golf event was approved by the International Olympic Committee Executive Board. The unique event at the 2028 Olympic Games will feature a male and female golfer, competing in a two-day 18-hole format in foursomes and four-ball.

Chief Executive Officer of R&A Mark Darbon shares his take on The Open being rescheduled due to 2028 Olympics

After the rescheduling of the three major championships, R&A CEO Mark Darbon stated that it was a collaborative effort from both ends. In his statement, he said that the R&A appreciated "the constructive discussions" and stated, via R&A:

"We have worked collaboratively with the relevant bodies and our partners to agree alternative dates for staging our major championships in 2028 to accommodate the Olympic golf competitions. We appreciate the constructive discussions we have had with all of the stakeholders..."

Darbon further stated that clarity in the discussion would be crucial for planning the golf calendar in 2028. He also assured that The Open Championship will return to its normal "mid July" schedule starting from 2029.
