The Ryder Cup team Europe was honored with the Team of the Year award at the 2025 BBC SPOTY Awards. The team, led by Luke Donald, had successfully defended their title at the biennial tournament in September. They clinched their fifth title on U.S. soil.
Team Europe was dominating at the Ryder Cup in 2023 when it was held in Rome, and this year, despite playing on foreign soil, they had an incredible performance and clinched the title.
The team consisted of Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Fitzpatrick, Ludvig Åberg, Jon Rahm, Sepp Straka, Rasmus Højgaard, Tyrrell Hatton, Robert MacIntyre, and Viktor Hovland. For their impressive game, they were awarded the BBC Sports Team of the Year award.

Rory McIlroy had an incredible season playing in 2025. He won the Masters and, with that, became the sixth golfer in the world to complete the career Grand Slam. He also played a key role in helping the European team win the Ryder Cup. For his impressive season, the Northern Irish golfer was awarded BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
He attended the award show and opened up about his season. He said:
"2025 has been the year that I made my dreams come true. From Augusta to the Ryder Cup and everything else in between, it really has been the year that dreams are made of. I've a lot of people to thank. Firstly, the public, thank you for voting me as your Sports Personality of the Year, but my family, my mum and dad, they sacrificed so much for me and I obviously wouldn't be here without them. My wife, Erica, my daughter, Poppy, they're what holds me together, my rock.
"They couldn't be here tonight, they're back in America, but I can't wait to get back to see them tomorrow and celebrate this with them as well. So thank you for all your support, everything that you've done for me over the years," he added.
Rory McIlroy has previously been awarded as Men’s Professional of the Year at the annual Irish Golf Writers’ Association awards. This season on the PGA Tour, he won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, The Players Championship, and the Masters. Meanwhile, on the DP World Tour, he won the Amgen Irish Open.
