Rory McIlroy has won several accolades over the years in his decorated professional career. Now, renowned broadcaster Piers Morgan has provided some insight in case the Northern Irishman loses out on the Sports Personality of the Year award.
In the upcoming week, the sports world will witness an athlete being crowned the 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Apart from rugby icon Ellie Kildunne, darts player Luke Littler, F1 driver Lando Norris, England footballers Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton, Rory McIlroy is one of the nominees for the award.
Morgan recently reposted the BBC's X(previously Twitter) post that revealed this year's SPOTY nominees. He further claimed that the award would lose its value if the five-time major champion did not win and wrote on his timeline:
"If @McIlroyRory doesn’t win this, it will render SPOTY utterly pointless and irrelevant. He’s had an unbelievable year, transporting him into the ranks of true sporting greats."
Take a look at Piers Morgan's X post dated December 11:
Rory McIlroy's nomination at this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year came after his amazing performances in the 2025 season. The golfer from Holywood, Northern Ireland, picked up a maiden win in the Masters and became the first European to win a career grand slam. McIlroy also contributed 3.5 points for his team's Ryder Cup win and ended the year by bagging his seventh Race To Dubai title.
It's worth noting that this is not the first time Morgan has rooted for McIlroy. The veteran broadcaster has always kept the two-time PGA Championship winner on his list of potential SPOTY winners.
When Piers Morgan vouched for Rory McIlroy's Sports Personality of the Year win in 2023
Back in 2023, McIlroy was one of the SPOTY contenders alongside England goalie Mary Earps, former England bowler Stuart Broad, Italian jockey Frankie Dettori, tennis icon Alfie Hewett, and English athlete Katarina Mary Johnson-Thompson. However, Earps ultimately won the award, and it caught the eye of Morgan.
The British journalist shared a post on X, announcing his support for athletes like Rory McIlroy. Morgan wrote on his timeline:
"Trying to get my head around two of England’s women footballers winning BBC SPOTY in successive years… while male sporting superstars with great personalities like Rory McIlroy, Frankie Dettori & Ronnie O’Sullivan have never won it. 🤔"

The 60-year-old reporter has lauded McIlroy on numerous instances, especially after his sudden-death playoff win against Justin Rose at Augusta National this year. Morgan also praised the PGA Tour veteran on X following the latter's Players Championship win, labeling him as Ireland's greatest ever golfer.
