LIV Golf on Tuesday revealed its decision to shift to 72-hole events starting in 2026, ditching the existing 54-hole tournaments. The Saudi-backed series’ decision has garnered mixed reaction from fans and players as the original format was marketed as a faster-paced alternative to the PGA Tour. Now, Talor Gooch has come out to state that he has “conflicting views” on the fresh format change.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sportskeeda at The International Series' Moutai Singapore Open 2025, Gooch admitted that he ‘doesn't love’ that the series is “doing what everybody else is doing.” However, the 2023 LIV Golf Individual Champion stated that he ‘understands the reasoning’ behind the decision.

Interestingly, the 33-year-old revealed that he’s curious on Official World Golf Rankings’ (OWGR) new stance on recognizing LIV.

Talor Gooch told Sportskeeda’s Vishnu Mohan at Singapore Island Country Club:

“I have conflicting views (about LIV’s format change). I don't love that we're doing what everybody else is doing, but I understand the reasonings behind it. So, another round of golf is not the end of the world. So, let's go get ready to play 72 holes.”

Gooch’s ‘conflicting view’ comment comes after his Saudi-backed circuit co-stars like Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau openly welcomed the new format change doing away with the three-day, 54-hole competitions.

Talor Gooch says World Rankings need ‘reset’

Talor Gooch went on to acknowledge that OWGR has communicated that the 72-hole format adaptation from 54 holes won’t be a ‘difference maker’ in LIV’s bout to win ranking recognition. Furthermore, he called for a ‘reset’ of the existing rankings system to ‘level out’ the current divide in the golf world. For the unversed, the former PGA Tour winner currently sits No.1745 in the rankings after falling off from former best of No.31.

Talor Gooch told Sportskeeda:

“I mean, I feel like the OWGR has communicated that 54 versus 72 hasn't made, that's not a difference maker for them. So, you know, I'll be curious to see if they actually do take this into account and change things. So, yeah, the OWGR and that whole system, it all needs a reset to kind of level out what's going on in the golf world. So hopefully we can get, you know, things kind of in a better place on a world stage for golf. So we'll see.”

Interestingly, Asian Tour commissioner Cho Minn Thant on Friday revealed that LIV chief executive Scott O’Neil and OWGR chairman Trevor Immelman have engaged in “regular talks” and claimed that a resolution is likely not far off. Talor Gooch’s comment on the rankings dismissing Saudi-circuit’s format change as ‘not a difference maker’ raises questions.

It is pertinent to note that LIV Golf initially applied to the OWGR for accreditation in July 2022, when former CEO Greg Norman was in control. However, former OWGR chairman Peter Dawson announced the rejection of the appeal in October 2023, following which the series formally withdrew its application in May 2024 formally withdrew its application. The rankings body had cited reservations about the league's structure and competitive format as reason for the rejection.

Earlier in July, Trevor Immelman, chairman of the OWGR board of directors, issued a statement confirming that the OWGR received a fresh application from LIV on June 30, 2025.
