Harris English has finally opened up about being pulled from the Ryder Cup Singles session, saying the situation was frustrating and hard to accept. In an interview with SiriusXM, he said that he was preparing for one of the biggest moments of his career when he was suddenly told he wouldn’t play.

Harris English was ruled out after Europe’s Viktor Hovland withdrew with a neck injury, which triggered the pre-agreed “envelope rule.” Each team had submitted the name of a player who would sit out if someone on the opposite side was injured. English later learned that he was the American chosen for the envelope.

“Like I’m gearing up, ready to go play a Sunday Singles match at the Ryder Cup. That was one of my two main goals this year was to make the Ryder Cup. To not be awarded that opportunity to play on Sunday, it really sucked,” Harris English said, adding that he was “pretty pissed.”

With no match to play, U.S. captain Keegan Bradley immediately put Harris English to work. He was given an earpiece and a microphone and told to help the team inside the ropes.

“It was a little bit of a shock and kind of had to process that for a little bit and then put my earpiece on and microphone on and kind of be another pseudo assistant captain,” he said.

Hovland’s injury came during Saturday’s Four-ball session, leaving Europe no choice but to activate the rule. The match was officially halved, and both players were removed from Sunday’s lineup.

The Americans put up a strong fight, winning six matches and tying five, but still fell 1.5 points short in a close finish. Now, nearly two months later, Harris English is set to return to action at the RSM Classic, his first PGA Tour start since Bethpage.
