President Donald Trump penned a heartfelt tribute on the demise of Fuzzy Zoeller. He referred to the two-time major champion as a remarkable person and stated that he would be missed dearly.
On Thursday, November 27, Fuzzy Zoeller passed away at the age of 74. He had won two major championships in his career, including one against Greg Norman in a playoff.
Following Zoeller's death, Donald Trump paid his tribute on Truth Social.
"Very sad to hear that the highly respected and beloved Professional Golfer, Fuzzy Zoeller, has passed away," he wrote. "In 1979, Fuzzy won the Masters Tournament (Only 1 of 3 to win in his first appearance!) and, in 1984, he won the U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club, and famously waved the white towel on the 18th Hole as he went on to beat Greg Norman in an 18 Hole playoff. A truly remarkable person and player, he will be missed!"
Fuzzy was born in 1951 in New Albany, Indiana, as Frank Urban Zoeller Jr., but he got his nickname from his initials. After turning professional in 1973, he claimed his first PGA Tour title six years later at the Andy Williams-San Diego Open Invitational. The same year, he won the Masters Tournament, edging out Ed Sneed and Tom Watson in a playoff.
Fuzzy Zoeller went on to add eight more PGA Tour wins to his career. He also competed on the PGA Tour Champions, where he won the Senior PGA Championship in 2002.
The ace golfer also came under controversy after making racially insensitive remarks about Tiger Woods during the 1997 Masters. For the uninitiated, the then 21-year-old Woods had won the Green Jacket by a whopping 12 strokes. Zoeller's comments received a lot of flak from the golf fraternity, and despite him apologizing several times, it affected his career hugely.
