Colin Mongomerie and Tiger Woods have had their share of heated exchanges in the past. The European Tour legend had earlier provoked a harsh response after asking the 15x major champion to quit playing major championships. Now, he has indirectly welcomed the 49-year-old to join the PGA Tour champions.

For the unversed, Woods will turn 50 next month, making him eligible to play on the senior Champions Tour. Rumors around the ace golfer making the Tour switch gained traction after golf insiders like Notah Begay III and former US PGA champion Davis Love III pushed the idea alongside the circuit officials who welcomed him. Now, Mongomerie has come out to state that the prospect of Woods playing on the Champions Tour would be “super.”

The 62-year-old doubled claimed that everyone involved would be excited to see the 82-time PGA Tour winner’s name on the senior circuit’s leaderboard. However, he took a sly jibe by stating this would be possible “if Woods is able to play.”

Colin Mongomerie commented on the potential arrival of Tiger Woods on the Champions Tour, as quoted by Golf journalist Garrett Johnston:

“I think it would be super for the Champions Tour if Tiger is able to play. Great for sponsors, tv, etc. And we will all begin our rounds looking for his name on the board. Where is he? Do we have a chance? Hopefully we do, but maybe not.”

Tiger Woods and Colin Montgomerie’s beef explored

Colin Montgomerie’s comments on Tiger Woods’ prospective Champions Tour entry comes months after the latter shut him down for comments on his playing schedule. Earlier, the 49-year-old, still in injury recovery, delivered a brutal response to Montgomerie for suggesting the former shouldn’t compete at the 152nd British Open.

Speaking in an in-depth interview with The Times, the 62-year-old addressed Woods missing the cut at back-to-back Major Championships. He stated that all sportsmen have a time to say goodbye and opined that “it’s very difficult to tell Tiger it’s time to go.”

Speaking about Tiger Woods ahead of The Open at Royal Troon, Colin Montgomerie said, as quoted by Today’s Golfer:

“I hope people remember Tiger as Tiger was, the passion and the charismatic aura around him. There is none of that now… At Pinehurst (for the US Open), he did not seem to enjoy a single shot and you think, ‘What the hell is he doing?’ He’s coming to Troon, and he won’t enjoy it there either… There is a time for all sportsmen to say goodbye, but it’s very difficult to tell Tiger it’s time to go. Obviously, he still feels he can win. We are more realistic.”

However, Woods clapped back at the comments by flaunting his lifetime exemption to signature PGA Tour events, which major-less Montgomerie doesn’t have.

Tiger Woods said in response:

“Well, as a past champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin’s not. He’s not a past champion, so he’s not exempt. So he doesn’t get the opportunity to make that decision. I do.”

Woods reiterated that he will continue playing “as long as he can play and I feel like I can still win the event.” For the unversed, the 2019 Masters win, which ended his 12-year Major win drought, was the legendary golfer’s last successful outing in the big events. He hasn’t made a notable performance in the Majors since.
