Justin Thomas got caught up in a back-and-forth with Bethpage black staff on Tuesday after the PGA Tour star blamed the grounds crew for his side’s disappointing Ryder Cup outing. An unsettled grounds staff member clapped back at Thomas’ comments by labeling them ‘excuses.’ The staffer claimed that the home team failed to ‘accept the loss.’Amid the exchange, US Team captain Keegan Bradley has come out to take the ‘blame’ of the side’s loss on himself. The 39-year-old, who debuted as a Ryder Cup captain in September, sidelined the argument between the turf staffer and Thomas by stating that the former did a ‘great job.’ He reiterated that the course was in ‘great shape’ during the event and the Europeans “just played so great” to win.He went on to ‘blame’ himself for the team loss. It is pertinent to note that the comment came minutes before he dubbed the Ryder Cup loss the ‘darkest moment’ of his life.Reacting to Justin Thomas’ comments on Ryder Cup grounds crew, Keegan Bradley said, as quoted by Tee Scripts:“Well, I do know that once the tournament starts on - the Sunday before the Ryder Cup, we lose control of the golf course, the home team. They were given specifications of where to keep the greens and they felt that they had done that. They did a great job. It's so difficult to figure out. There's so much going on and you want the greens at a certain speed and they're telling you that they are…But the greens are so flat that it's difficult I think to get the pace that we were looking for. But the course was in great shape. You know, the Europeans, they just played so great. I wish that we could blame somebody, but we can't. Blame me, I blame myself for that lost. It would be nice to blame that but we can't.”Justin Thomas blamed Bethpage grounds crew over bad Ryder Cup outing For the unversed, Luke Donald’s European side crushed the Americans across the first two days owing to a red-hot putting display on greens. Months later, Justin Thomas has revealed this being a point of contention between the US team and the greens staff. He claimed that the setup “weren’t at all what Keegan (Bradley) had asked for.”Speaking in the latest episode of the No Laying Up podcast, Justin Thomas said:“I don't know why they weren't at all what Keegan had asked for. I mean, he had been pretty clear of asking for a certain speed and wanting it fast enough. I watched them argue with us that they were 13s (on the Stimpmeter). It's like, 'Guys, we play golf every week, like, look on TV at how many guys are leaving putts short. Nobody is getting... You can't have a putt roll 3-4 feet past the hole. Like, these greens are slow. Speed them up.'”Thomas went on to dub the incident “bizarre” as it was ‘unexpected’ during a home Ryder Cup. He later owned up the loss by stating that the unsupportive course setup was “not an excuse.” Furthermore, the 32-year-old was forced to defend himself after a Bethpage greenskeeper shot back at the claims.Responding to the comments from the staffer, Thomas claimed his comments were ‘taken out of context.’ He clarified that the ‘frustration’ he referred to was between skipper Bradley and ‘whoever’ he spoke to ahead of the event.
