Asian Tour’s Miguel Tabuena sits second on the International Series Ranking behind leader Scott Vincent. Owing to some recent rule changes, the Filipino golfer is in order to get a spot on LIV Golf 2026 if he holds the position till the end of the season. Now, the golfer has come out to laud the breakaway tour’s college golf-like team format.

Tabuena was speaking in the Moutai Singapore Open 2025 pre-event press conference when he said he has ‘no issues’ with LIV Golf’s latest change to 72-holes format. However, he added that he’ll need to get used to the shotgun start. Later, when questioned by a Sportskeeda reporter about other aspects of LIV he’ll need adjusting to, the 31-year-old said he ‘would love’ the team format despite having no college golf experience. He dubbed it ‘something different.’

Speaking to the SK reporter and others at the Singapore Island Country Club, Miguel Tabuena said on Wednesday:

“I’ve had no issues with that (new LIV Golf format). You know, we’re used to playing four rounds. I think I have to get used to the 1pm shotgun start, right? I mean, they’re great. That’s more of what I’d have to get used to… I played Asian Games, I played the Olympics, but I never played college golf. And I think college golf is probably the most similar to LIV Golf, maybe. I think I would love it. It’s something different. I’ve been a pro for almost 15 years already.”

The International Series Philippines champion went on to clear that it’s still ‘early days’ for him to make strong comments about LIV Golf.

He added:

“It’ll be nice to play for something more than yourself in every event you play. But, as I said, it’s still early days, I don’t want to think that far ahead or get my hopes up. If that time comes, I’ll give you a better answer.”

Miguel Tabuena dubs LIV Golf participation his 'goal'

Miguel Tabuena’s latest comments come just a week after he admitted that a potential move to LIV Golf has been the ‘goal’ for him all season. The four-time Asian Tour winner turned emotional as he won the International Series Philippines in front of his home crowd late last month. Following this, the golfer, who shot three consecutive 65s to top a field that included Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed, revealed the win inspires him to fight for a LIV spot.

For the unversed, Tabuena entered the Filipino event week ranked 430th in the Official World Golf Rankings. The win saw him leap up to No. 251 and now position him to make a run at the biggest prize in the International Series – a move to the big league.

Speaking after his win at the Sta Elena Golf Club in Santa Rosa, Laguna, Miguel Tabuena said, as quoted by Golf.com:

“Of course, that is the goal, you know, we want to be on LIV Golf. That was a big goal this year with my game. From the beginning of this week, I didn’t have that in mind, but to be able to get it done brings me so much confidence and belief in myself that I can actually win these events and hopefully next year.”

For the unversed, Joaquin Niemann finished top of the International Series rankings, resulting in no promotions to LIV Golf. Miguel Tabuena’s home win put him second on the merit list, just 108 points behind leader and former Iron Heads GC player Scott Vincent with three tournaments to play.
